What happens if I drive on a toll road?

New Zealand has several toll roads, all on the north island. Tolls vary dependant on the road used and the length of the journey. Toll charges are based upon information provided to us, as the registered owner of the vehicle, from a toll road authority.

If the information provided to us by the toll road authority - time, date and vehicle - indicates that you were the renter, the credit or debit card you provided will be charged for the toll with an administration fee of $25 NZD per toll. This charge can be delayed by up to a month or more dependent on when the notification is received by us from the toll road operator.

Can I pay my own tolls?

Yes, customers should pay their own tolls within 5 days of using a toll road.

You can pay for tolls up to 180 days before you pass through them or up to 5 days after you pass through them. Travellers can pay for tolls in 3 ways:

  1. Via the NZTA website
  2. Via cash payment at a participating service station nearby a toll road (A transaction fee applies)
  3. Over the phone via the NZTA tolling contact centre (0800 40 20 20) (A service fee applies)

Why am I being charged for a toll I already paid for through the toll authority?

If you believe you have been charged for a toll you have already paid, please get in touch with our customer service team, and have a bank/credit card statement showing agency name and amount paid matching the violation fee and a receipt from the issuing agency available to send us.

Can you send me the actual violation or toll notice?

The email we sent you includes details about the date and time, as well as the location of the incident. However, since we typically only send electronic notifications - which reduce processing expenses and time delays - paper copies of tickets or violations generally are not available.
